How to Register an LLC
Forming an LLC (Limited Liability Company) separates your personal finances from your business and gives you credibility with clients and banks. Here is the process for the DMV area.

1. Choose the state and name
Decide whether to register in Virginia, Maryland or DC (usually where you operate). Check that the name is available on the relevant Secretary of State portal and that it ends in “LLC”.
2. Appoint a registered agent
You need a person or service with a physical address in the state to receive legal documents. You can be your own agent if you live in the state.
3. File the Articles of Organization
This is the form that officially creates your LLC. The filing fee is around $100 in Virginia, $100 in Maryland and $99 in DC (verify current fees).
4. Get your EIN and open your account
Once the LLC is created, request your EIN for free from the IRS and open a business bank account. See our related guides for each step.
